This guide covers every activity, who it suits, and how to plan your visit.

What is Thrillzone?

Thrillzone is a Qualmark Gold–rated activity centre with venues in Takapuna, Auckland CBD (group bookings only) and Queenstown. It’s run by Motion Cinema Limited, the same team behind Escape Quest’s gold rush escape rooms, which share the Takapuna venue.

The Takapuna venue is the flagship: the widest range of activities, open to the public every day, and a short walk from Takapuna Beach.

Which virtual reality experience should you choose?

Choose Hologate for an easy, social first try; Omni VR for the most physical, immersive game; and the free-roaming arena if your group wants to move together.

  • Omni VR is the most active. Players need to be between 1.40 m and 1.95 m tall and under 130 kg.

  • Hologate VR is the easiest for mixed ages and first-timers.

  • The free-roaming arena lets up to eight players explore one virtual space together.

  • VR escape rooms swap physical locks for virtual puzzles — great for groups who’ve done every real escape room.

VR at Thrillzone is suitable for people who wear glasses or contact lenses.

What about escape rooms at Thrillzone?

Thrillzone Takapuna offers three escape formats: live escape rooms, VR escape rooms and the Outdoor Escape Adventure.

The live rooms are run by Escape Quest and themed on New Zealand’s 1860s–70s gold rush: Gangster’s Gambit – The Great Gold Escape, Gold Heist in the Gold Rush, and Murder in Thames. The Outdoor Escape Adventure has three storylines to choose from — Operation Mindfall, Magic Portal and Blackout — and takes your team around the streets of Takapuna.

Is Thrillzone good for kids and families?

Yes. Thrillzone suits all ages, and families can mix gentler activities with high-energy ones. Younger children often love Hologate VR, Battleground and the Outdoor Escape Adventure, while teens head straight for Omni VR.

  • KidzClub: supervised activities for children aged 4–13, from one hour to a full day, so parents can enjoy some time out.

  • School holiday programme: Thrillzone runs an OSCAR-approved holiday programme in Takapuna.

  • Birthday parties: party packages combine activities with party time. See the birthday parties page for current options.

Can Thrillzone host groups and corporate events?

Yes. Thrillzone can host groups of more than 200 people by rotating teams through different activities. It’s a popular choice for team building, Christmas parties, social clubs, school and sports groups, and stag and hen dos.

For city-based teams, the Auckland CBD venue (corner of Quay and Hobson Street, Viaduct Harbour) runs the Outdoor Escape Adventure for groups of 15 to 200 people. Catering can be supplied on site through partner caterers.
